Performance & Mixing by Liann J. Kang, 2024

Paying attention to the expressivity of human voice, the project develops singing styles that is unrefined and intimate with delicate use of vibratos and microtones, away from the traditional Western classical singing techniques. By having vocal lines mimicking the essence of singing in a language yet without semantic meaning, the song creates its own narratives sonically. It derives from Kang’s childhood experience growing up in South Korea, listening to classical vocal music mostly in various foreign languages, which allowed her to pay attention to sound itself. This approach invites the audience to follow narratives and expressivity of music free from the constraints of linguistic understanding and creates a shared experience of foreignness that transcends cultural or linguistic boundaries, fostering inclusivity for listeners of all backgrounds.
